Livestock Evaluator

Under the "Growing Forward" program put out by the Canadian and Ontario governments, changes have been made to modernize the "Livestock, Poultry and Honey Bee Protection Act". As of July 1st, 2011 the "Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program" and the "Protection of Livestock and Poultry from Dogs Act" came into effect superseding the old Livestock, Poultry and Honey Bee Protection Act.

Under the new program, more species of livestock are eligible for compensation, more types of predators are eligible and the maximum compensation values have increased. The procedure is now:

• Within 48 hours of discovering the death or injury the livestock owner must notify the municipality
• Within 3 days after receiving notification, the valuer will conduct a full investigation
• Within 10 days after receiving notification, the valuer will prepare the report (called the Program Application).
• The municipality, the livestock owner or OMAFRA have 20 business days from the time the Program Application is received to request a review by a second valuer.
• If there are no requests for review, the municipality can issue payment to the livestock owner.

NOTE:  Claims for livestock killed or injured after April 1st, 2012 will need to have a Premises ID number and a valid Farm Business Registration number, or one of the allowable exemptions for that claim to be eligible.
