Memorial Gates at Galbraith Field Dismantled Following Structural Damage

MORRIS-TURNBERRY, ON – The Municipality of Morris-Turnberry, in cooperation with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, undertook the careful dismantling of the memorial entrance gates at Galbraith Field in Lowertown, Wingham, on June 16th, 2026.
On May 25, 2026, the Municipality became aware that a vehicle had struck the upper portion of the entrance gates, causing extensive damage to both the metal sign and the fieldstone pillars supporting the structure. Following inspections and assessments by municipal staff and the Municipality’s engineer, it was determined that the structure had become unsafe and posed a risk to public safety.
Recognizing the cultural and historical significance of the memorial, every effort was made to preserve the structure. Prior to dismantling, each stone was carefully marked and catalogued to document its original location. The stones were then removed by hand and prepared for storage by the Municipality to facilitate potential reconstruction or reuse in the future.
This work was not undertaken lightly and was carried out with great care and respect. Council and staff recognize the importance of this memorial to veterans, their families, and the broader community, and appreciate the understanding of residents as these difficult but necessary actions were taken to safeguard both the public and the monument's legacy.
All stone and metal components will be stored by the Municipality until such time as a plan can be made regarding the future of the memorial.
